Full Time Score Whickham FC 2-0 Thornaby FC (Ebac Northern League Division 1) Attendance:173
Referee: Craig Dean
Thornaby made the hour journey to play Whickham FC who are one of the favourites for promotion and manager Steve Bell made 1 change from Saturday's Win in the FA Cup with Jack Bailey unavailable Andrew Burton came into the team.
The first 18 minutes were scrappy with both sides having a lot of the ball but both sides defended well and It was the home side who had the first chance of the match when Chad Collins picked up the ball 20 yards out on the left hand side of Thornaby's penalty area and his effort went over the bar. The home side then had the next effort when Matthew Pattison's free kick on the left hand side of the penalty area was tipped behind by James Dawson. Thornaby had there first chance of the night when Joe Scaife Wheatley's free kick from just outside the Whickham penalty area just went over the bar.
Half time Whickham FC 0-0 Thornaby FC.
All of Thornaby's hard work was undone 1 minute into the second half when Whickham took the lead when Lee McAndrew's cross from the left was headed back by Dale Burrell and MATTHEW PATTINSON fired home from the edge of the box. Thornaby looked to get back into the match but the final ball was lacking at times and Whickham doubled the lead when Kieran Galbraith's long pass forward found SCOTT ROBSON who rounded Dawson and tapped into the net with 78 minutes gone. Whickham had the final chance of the match when Carl Finnigan picked up the ball from 25 yards out and his spectacular effort just went past the post.
Not a disgrace getting beat by one of the favourites for promotion we contained them for long periods and unfortunately our hard work was undone as we conceded a sloppy goal from our point of view and then a long ball done us then it was game over.
One thing that is required from the club of the players in every match is that the players show passion and commitment and work hard and last night they done that in abundance and while we lacked a bit in the final third we look solid for most of the match.
As a club last night we were proud of the players efforts and we go again tomorrow night as we travel to play Consett in what will be another great test for the lads.
