Whickham FC 2 Thornaby FC 1Well it was certainly no classic game, spoilt by a very strong wind, blowing in the home sides favour in the first half and Thornaby’s in the second. Whickham’s Dan Hill hit the bar in the first minute and they deservedly took the lead when Mark Fitzpatrick finished well finding himself free in on goal in the 9th minute.
Whickham continued to use the wind well and on 27 minutes a great move between Dan Hill and Rooky saw a Craigs cross to Kallum Broadhead who hit home to make it 2-0. A great save from our keeper Adrian Beblowski kept us in it when Steven Aiston was clean through. In the second half Thornaby’s Theodore Furness hit the bar within the first minute, and from then on Whickham defended superbly as Thornaby tried to use the wind to their advantage as Whickham did in the first half.
We continually had to rely on Adrian when Whickham broke through he again pulled off a number of great saves to stop them increasing their lead. Thornaby continued to throw everything at Whickham but could not find the net, Whickham’s keeper also continued to save everything.
In the 87th minute Thornaby finally got one back when Richard Walker scored from a corner to make it 2-1, Thornaby again threw everything at the home side forcing a couple of corners in the dying minutes but Whickham managed to see the game out and gain the 3 points, sending us home with nothing.
